Aspects on Innovation
Points of views on Innovation
We recently announced a task seeking cell lines for Chordoma, A rare type of bone cancer. We inquired Josh Sommer, Founder and Executive Director of the Chordoma grounds, To talk to us a bit about his Challenge and tell us why it's so which a solution is found.
Nice to be here Josh, Thank you for being with us today and talking to our Solvers about your Challenge.
Chordoma is painstaking-Getting, But persistent, Form of bone cancer that is caused in the skull and spine in people of all ages. This can proximity to the brain and spinal cord, Chordomas often cause serious neurologic disability, And are quite strenuous to treat. About thirty percent of chordoma patients are cured with surgery and light, But when you aren't, Few solutions are available, As radiation treatment is usually ineffective. Because of this, Most patients will succumb to their disease within 7 years. Just lately, A number of promising therapeutic targets have been identified which could offer hope to chordoma patients in desperate need of effective treatment plans. Cell lines are crucial to evaluating these treatment targets and for testing and developing new treatments. Having said that, Scarcity of valid chordoma cell lines has hamstrung the Directly From Vladimir Ribakov’s Trading Room: Multi-confirmation, Divergence-based Forex Alert Trading Strategy, For Dominating Forex In All Market Conditions And Time Frames. Why have Chordoma cell lines been so hard to come by in the past?
A good number putative chordoma cell lines have been reported in the literature, However only one of them cell lines (Titled U-CH1) Has molecular and genetic features usual for chordomas. This cell line was made by a lab in Germany in 2001 and remained scarcely used until 2007, When the Chordoma support gained the rights to distribute this cell line - since then we've provided it to 26 labs world wide. To confirm and generalize their findings, Experts need to study multiple different cell lines, Se we are always searching for additional cell lines which we can distribute. In the past three years at least a dozen scientific study has begun trying to create new chordoma cell lines, But so far most have found chordoma cells hard to grow in culture - they divide slowly and tend to misplace chordoma-Like real estate belongings over time. While several promising cell lines are in the pipeline, New approaches and more time are needed to reach our goal of 10 cell lines.
You are providing multiple prizes, And the contest will be posted for 5 months - each of which are a bit unique for an InnoCentive Challenge. Can you tell us a bit about what winning Solvers will receive and why the task has such a long posting period?
We aim to settle on, And provide, A solar cell of 10 well-Labeled chordoma cell lines. To this effect, The Chordoma foundation make up will award $10,000 for each validated chordoma cell line one of them panel. Simply chordoma cells grow slowly, The new chordoma cell line could take a year or more, However we know that several art prints for sale researchers are already learning to establish chordoma cell lines, And could succeed over the following five months. We hope that this prize will encourage these detectives to continue their efforts and try new creative approaches. We also hope that the prize will spur other detectives to try their hand at creating chordoma cell lines. The Chordoma Foundation will honor this offer even after the task with InnoCentive expires.
Given that we now have not many scientists directly working on Chordoma cures, Where do you expect the reply to this Challenge to come from?
Yooughout-CH1 is planned by a pathology lab that was not, And isn't, Particularly concerned about chordoma. They happened to see a chordoma and, Knowing that it was an intriguing and unusual tumor, Decided to try to create a cell line from it. Candidate or resident will see a chordoma and be inspired to put it into culture. Creating a cell line from a hard-from-Culture tumor type is often more of an art than a science; A person with access to fresh tumor sample and a "Green usb" Could accomplish something.
Is it feasible that a solution to this Challenge could help other fields of research? Can you expand upon what other types of research might take advantage of the work done here?
Chordoma cell lines could be useful for various kinds of types of research. As an example, Several developing biologists and biomedical engineers studying the intervertebral disc - which comes from the same embryonic tissue as chordoma - have requested chordoma cell lines from the Chordoma base. and, Chordoma cell lines are valuable for staring at the function of a gene called brachyury, Which has been implicated as a key mediator of invasion and metastasis in various other tumor types, And is garnering interest as a potential beneficial target. There is growing evidence implying that many chordomas are driven by aberrant activation of brachyury, As this gene is very highly expressed in pretty much all chordomas, And copying of brachyury causes familial chordoma. While several other cancer cell lines are said to express brachyury, It is most especially active in U-CH1. Mastering chordoma cell lines that express brachyury could, Fot that reason, Shed light on the role this gene plays in your production and progression of cancer.
You have got a personal reason for founding the Chordoma Foundation and for launching this Challenge. Can you tell us about this?
I was clinically determined to have a skull-Starting chordoma in 2006. Utilizing my diagnosis I joined the only NIH-Funded chordoma research lab in hopes of hastening the introduction of new treatments for my disease. My work in the lab needed using chordoma cell lines, So I attempt to obtain all the cell lines that I could find. It was shocking to discover that only one of five cell lines that we received developed into chordoma cells. To help overcome supply, And other wines, My mother and I started the Chordoma grounds in 2007. Since then we've brought together over 100 researchers from all over the world, And with their input have develop a roadmap for rapidly developing effective treatments for chordoma. Though often, Access to cell lines remains a major obstacle to carry out this roadmap. I am now four years into an analysis with an average survival of seven years, So I feel a great sense of urgency to increase the speed of the pace of research. Finding additional chordoma cell lines is obviously important to making that happen. Playing, And the lives of many can provide homeowners become friends, Could make use of it
